This paper was part of a larger project on the Jewish community in Atlantic Canada supported by the Secretary of State for Multiculturalism and the Atlantic Jewish Council. The paper was presented at the annual meeting of the Canadian Jewish Historical Society, Learned Societies Conference, Halifax, June 1981. Approximately two pages of text were omitted from this article and were later published as an erratum in volume 6, number 2, 99–101.
